SPEED DATING?

Writer: Mel WMel W

Feeling a bit stagnant online? Maybe texting emojis back and forth isn't quite cutting it anymore? If you're collecting more pen pals than meeting on actual dates, it might be time to shake things up.

How does speed dating sound?

Speed dating events can be like a box of chocolates, you never know what you'll get!

The events can vary with small events feeling like an intimate dinner party while large ones can feel like the Super Bowl of dating conventions. Most events are set up for specific groups, like by age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, profession, income, or interests — there's something for everyone!

The venues vary from lively restaurants, cool cafés, inner-city bars, or suburban clubs. With as much variety as an all-you-can-eat buffet, these events are designed to be fun and efficient with a focus on atmosphere,

Let me give you the 101. So, get ready to put on your best smile, bring your A-game, and maybe even practice a few icebreaker jokes. Who knows? You might meet a match in the time it takes to finish a cup of coffee as most ‘dates’ go for 3 minutes to 10 minutes!

Decision made! Often through sites like Eventbrite or dedicated speed dating companies and platforms, you buy a ticket online to book your place. This helps keep the numbers balanced and ensures a good mix of people. Remember to download your ticket!

Clothes maketh the man

You will probably tell a few friends who will either pat you on the back, laugh behind your back, or have your back Next you should work out what to wear. Tip: Look up where the event is being held. Make a judgment call but then consider what the following attire could translate……

Loud Colourful Shirts: Wearing a party on your chest that screams, I have arrived, prepare yourself!

Conservative Business Shirt: This shirt says, I have my life together... or at least I want you to think I do, or I put the PRO in professional.

T-shirts with Big Motifs: Think of it as your personality on fabric. Depending on the motif, a giant pizza slice could say I put the FUN in funny or a cool band could say I put the FUN in funky.

Collared Short Sleeve Shirt: The ultimate ‘I'm trying, but not too hard’ look. Think casual Fridays in the office.

Shorts: These are the universal sign that, I'm on holiday, even if it's just in my mind. But if it’s after 5 pm at a bar or restaurant you could come across as my hero effort is close to zero.

Jeans: The Swiss Army knife of clothing says. ‘I'm ready for anything, from a rock concert to a casual date’. Jean Genius.

Long Cotton Pants: These are for when you need to look like an adult. They say, ‘I can handle responsibility,’ even if you're just faking it till you make it.

Runners: Whether you're running or just running late, runners keep you comfy and stylish but perhaps too low-key or too casual.

Loafers: The shoes that say, ‘I'm sophisticated and efficient.’ Perfect for when you want to look sharp without the hassle of tying laces.

Tie-up Leather Shoes: Footwear equivalent of a power move. Ideal for when you need to bring your A-game.

The Chariot arrives!

Arrive Early: Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early, or as advised by the event organiser. Think of it as giving yourself extra time to find parking, fix your hair, practice your ‘I'm totally not nervous’ smile, and check your teeth!

Drinking Etiquette: If you're a drinker, avoid showing up with too many drinks under your belt. If you must, have one or two to take the edge off, but no more than that. You want to be remembered for your charm, not slurring with your face in your palm.

Check-In: You'll arrive at the event and be greeted. Try not to trip over the welcome mat—first impressions matter! Show your ticket on your phone, flash your QR code, or say your name to be marked off.

Name Tag aka Badge of Awesomeness:

You'll get a name tag. Wear it proudly on your chest and not your bicep… yes this has happened where a guy wore his nametag on his bicep to flex while talking.

Table for Two: You'll be assigned to your first table. Think less ‘job interview’ and more ‘casual chat about the weather.’ Or better yet, dazzle the tribe with your vibe, even if the party is just a table for two!

And we are off! Let the games begin!

Pairing Up: You'll be paired with different partners each round. It's like speed networking, but with more potential for romance fewer business cards, and no HR Department requesting to meet with you.

Round Duration: Each ‘date’ lasts 3-10 minutes. Just enough time to decide if they're a keeper or if you'd rather be home binge-watching. Think of it as a mini-interview, but with less pressure, more flirting, and just as much variety as a wooden spice rack from the 1970s!

Number of Partners: You'll meet 5-10 potential matches. It's a dating buffet—sample everything!  Just remember, no double-dipping, and trust me everyone will notice if you do!

Chatting: During each round, you will chat with your 'date' and see if there's a spark. Pro tip: Avoid talking about your ex or your collection of antique spoons. One guy once opened with, ‘Did you know you only have to murder two people in separate events to be a serial killer?’ My thoughts were, ‘Great, I have 7 minutes and 30 seconds to survive this... NEXT!’

Bell or Timer: When the bell rings, it's time to move on. Ding! Next! Tip: When the bell goes off, make a smooth exit rather than lingering. Leave them wanting more and avoid looking too eager.

Scorecard: At some events, you'll get a paper scorecard to jot down notes between rounds. Think ‘Great smile,’ ‘Talked about cats too much,’ or ‘Tried to convince me the Earth is flat.’ At other events, you might get a QR code to scan at the end of the night to see if you matched. Either way, it's like playing bingo with potential soulmates.

Mixer: After the rounds, it's time to mingle at the mixer. Some events offer free snacks, while others might have bar prices that make you feel like you're buying drinks at a five-star resort. But hey, don't worry about the chump change—focus on finding someone who floats your boat. Who knows, you might meet someone who makes you forget all about those overpriced cocktails!

Final Scorecard: Submit your final scorecard whether via an app, QR code, or old school paper indicating who you'd like to see again. Choose wisely!

Match Results: Organisers, app, or QR code will let you know if there's a match. If so, they'll share contact info. No pressure, you've got this!
